1. Explain performance management by using a metaphor, comparing it to something in everyday life or an abstract concept:
Performance management is like creating and applying the dashboard on a car. You need to know key facts about how you're doing in order to get where you want to go (how fast, how much fuel you have left, etc.).
2. 2010 was the international year of biodiversity. What living organism best represents the term performance?
Although the first thing that comes to mind are fast-moving animals like cheetahs or lions, in reality, organisms that can deal with difficult environments (such as the creatures living in deep-sea hydrothermal sulfuric vents) are probably more apt.
3. What would you recommend as best practice in performance management?
Pick 3-5 key metrics for each area you care about. Don't overload the reporting team.
4. What aspects of performance management should be explored more through research?
How measuring metrics affects the things you measure.
5. Share a short story about the use of performance management concepts in practice (experienced, witnessed or read by you).
When I helped a nonprofit on a pro bono consulting project figure out what metrics they wanted to track to measure their effectiveness.
