1. Explain performance management by using a metaphor, comparing it to something in everyday life or an abstract concept:
I may compare performance management to human beings as humans require nurturing in all sense of the word whereby to have well functioning human being, the appropriate nurturing of body & soul is to be followed.
2. 2010 was the international year of biodiversity. What living organism best represents the term performance?
I am sure the example i gave above is the appropriate answer to this question...Human Beings
3. What would you recommend as best practice in performance management?
In my opinion, there's no defined "pass partout" practice in performance management. It's very much dependent on context, task level and requirements and above all on people's personalities and culture.
4. What aspects of performance management should be explored more through research?
I think more research has to be placed on exploring people's talents and hidden skills and capabilities. This creates potential success stories in my opinion.
5. Share a short story about the use of performance management concepts in practice (experienced, witnessed or read by you).
This small story took place in the quality assurance department that i used to manage, I've discovered a hidden capability in an employee who used to carry out routine inspection tasks. This capability showed up when an ERP system application was about to be installed and the consultants were requiring a team consisting of individuals from all concerned departments to undergo an intensive training on this ERP. I selected that inspector to be part of this team along with others and it turned out to be a very successful step where he's proven very suitable for this job and accordingly was assigned a role of ERP system coordinator that has to do with product design and application. This story reflects the importance of allocating potential skills in people and orienting those skills in the right direction to better serve the overall goal of the business as well as the personal goals of the employee.
